“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”
~ Rumi
What I love is all things ocean! How fortunate that I am so close to the sea so much of the time. As Rumi suggests in the quote above, follow that strong pull of what you love and you won’t regret it. For me, that “pull” is my intuition and I’m learning that when I listen to it, my photographic journey becomes much more personal. A vision unique to myself begins to manifest.
No one wants to be the artistic clone of another. We nature photographers search for a way to express ourselves and our love for this magnificent earth. We aspire to inspirt hope and love within humanity for our vulnerable ecosystem, that we might all tread a bit more lightly and with intention.
“Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, it touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea.”
~ Dr. Sylvia Earle, author of World is Blue: How our Fate and the Ocean’s Are One
Thanks so much for spending time on my blog. I love getting comments!
With gratitude,
Susan
As you seek to inspire with your art, know that you have inspired me. As a result of spending time with you, and watching you create, I now try to find my own inner voice to connect to my subject, as well as my immediate and obvious attraction to the subject. Your images capture that under-current and energy of your subjects, the mystical and the mysterious that lies just below the surface. Love the above images, especially the Kelp Knot!
You’re so kind, Nancy. It was so much fun working with you in Bandon and watching you flex those creative muscles of yours. I am continuously inspired by your astounding wildlife images from around the world! I’m quite sure our paths will cross again one day. 🙂
Superb! I am looking forward to learning some of these techniques at the workshop in October.
So glad you like them, Chris! We can definitely work on these techniques in the fall. I’m really looking forward to it!
I often think about what makes the difference between the specific and the transcendent. When is a piece of kelp a piece of kelp, and what serves to inflate its colors and forms to sea poetry?
Intuition. Surrender. Mastery of skills. What an alchemical union that gives rise to these images, Susan. You show us what is possible.
Many years ago an artist at a workshop said to me. Why are you a photographer? Photographers just document. You should paint. Well, I might if I felt I could but photography is my passion and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Over the years the sting of her words subsided as I realized that photography is indeed an art. Not only that, but it teaches us to see and connect with ourselves and the world in a way I never dreamed possible.
Your words are so thoughtful and encouraging, Donna. Thank you. I know we share a similar vision of our world. And a similar passion for photography!
Beautiful work as usual. As to Rumi, he offered the following advice to would-be writers: “Sell your cleverness and purchase bewilderment”–I shared this with fellow members of the library writers’ group
Ahhh….Rumi is so wise! Love that quote. Thank you so much, Jeff!
Susan, The Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful places in this great big world. I love it and I love your photographic vision. Your an inspiration. Thank you.
Hi Dan, Thank you for your very kind words! I really appreciate the comment. Yes, Oregon is definately one of the most beautiful places on earth!
