It is with profound pride and joy that I announce the release of my first book, a photographic memoir accompanied by reflections describing my relationship to the sea. “Taking Refuge” was photographed in and around my hometown of Bandon within Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and other protected areas.
I offer this book with gratitude, as a tribute to this magnificent and irreplaceable coastal region. ““It’s a universal story of bounty and beauty, but it is also a very personal story. I’ve had the luxury of time living a stone’s throw from a sublime refuge. Shooting at the feet of majestic sea stacks, gaudy with wildlife, has been an awakening for me.
Throughout my creative process at ocean’s shore, a deep abiding love for the sea has grown within me. I have come to understand that protected wild land is as critical for the vitality of humanity as it is for the birds, seal pups and sea stars of this world.” ~ From the Preface by Susan Dimock
“Susan’s empathy for her subject is palpable. Perhaps her many years as a social worker have taught her the power of listening or maybe she is a natural listener; either way, her words, like her art, exemplify a spirit of humble attention to her subject without imposing ego upon it. Her desire to protect the fragile worlds she photographs is powerful and motivating.”

“Susan was kind enough to share with me an advance copy of her forthcoming book, “Taking Refuge On the Oregon Coast”. I was moved and taken not only by what I saw with her deeply connected images but also by the writings and poetry interspersed throughout the book. Of course, iconic Oregon Coast images are included, however, the images that deeply resonated with me are those that capture the intimate, possibly unnoticed or overlooked scenes such as patterns in the sand, water washing over kelp or colorful stones, a lone feather and soft pastel long exposures all evoking a deep connection to a place that Susan cares for. Mixed in with her impressive landscape images are stunning photographs of coastal wildlife. Susan has beautifully and thoughtfully captured the essence of this coastal region with imagery, poetry and words. As I find myself in need of refuge from the pressures and stressors that life can sometimes offer, this book will be one I choose to cuddle up with knowing I will be comforted.”
